Ultrasound

WHAT IS ULTRASOUND?

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging method that produces images of structure within the body using high-frequency sound waves. No radiation is involved. Ultrasound is a great diagnostic tool used to observe the body’s internal organs. The images are computed in real time which allows radiologists and physicians to observe tissue movement and blood flow that is crucial to the diagnosis of many illnesses.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

Most ultrasound exams are painless. A clear gel will be applied to your skin, the gel is used to eliminate air bubbles between the transducer and your body. There will be pressure applied to make secure contact with the skin to ensure that the sound waves are accurate and visualization of the area of interest is good. The examination usually takes from 15 to 30 minutes, after which you will be able to return to your normal activities.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE?

For most exams no preparation is needed. However, if your abdomen is being evaluated you may be instructed not to eat or drink for 3 hours before your test. Some tests may require a full bladder (you will be instructed by our technicians if there are any special instructions to follow). You should wear comfortable loose fitting clothing, or you may be asked to change into hospital scrubs/gown.

RESULTS

Your results of your ultrasound imaging study will be interpreted by our board certified radiologist and sent to your physician.
